Forum Turn-Based Strategy Game - Part 2: Map First Look

Rate this Entry
This is the first idea for the map. It is by no means final but this will be the general outline. The scale will change somewhat (right now the island is positively tiny. The cities will be scaled down so there will be more room to maneuver).

I am not yet completely sure how large the grids will be. They must at least be large enough to hold unit icons. The red lines are roads/shipping lanes and/or trade routes. These are also just preliminary and may change. I may also add more villages and towns and/or resource generating places in the more remote parts of the map so that there will be more incentive to move units around and take places away from the enemy.

Trade routes will yield a certain amount of money, and so will towns. The main city will also be the main income generator, but trade routes and towns will add up quite a bit.

A city with a port will have additional income and/or trade routes available.

Towns
Different sorts of towns will be available: fishing villages, farms, mines, lumber mills, townships, tradeposts, monasteries, fortresses. Some or all of these may be implemented in the final map. Some of these will have different or additional effects.

I will include a preliminary unit list in the third part of this series, as I don't have the time to type a whole list now. Look forward to the first units in part three of this series!

I have made grid maps myself for boardgames. Most useful to me are the 'catan' hexagons - they allow to travel to all sides. It will be a bit of work to draw them into the map, but it certainly works.

I'll take a gander on the great big internet, maybe I can manage to make it a bit easier on myself. Otherwise I'll try to stick with normal square grids, depending on how easy it is...
