This fellow's huge hand proves that my instinct is sometimes a bit lacking , but I tend to just start drawing a stick figure and take it from there. You basically learn that sort of thing from practice, so you can start off from one of those figurines and eventually you will find you won't need it anymore. I'm actually thinking of spending a day or so just drawing stick figures and sketches of people of various sizes, ages, and genders, so I can practice/refresh my basic anatomy skills again. I see I'm making consistent mistakes in proportions and posture, so I have to work on that. After that, I need to look into perspective. I remember as a kid I thought perspective was too hard so I never actually learned it... so I have to put in the labour now.

    Practice practice practice!

Will you be drawing using traditional media (pencil or paint) or digital media? Would be awesome if you started drawing again, then we could compare notes and breathe some life back into the Arts section here.
Id be practicing with pencil and pens. I like to start with pencil, get it right, then go over in fine ink pen, then shade in pencil/graphite/charcoal. I always liked black and white and working with the limited colour spectrum that it offers.

My proportions are well off, which is why i probably preferred drawing abstract or when it came to people more stylistically/cartoonish. Id like to buy one of those figurines to get my proportions right. The gif that you put earlier shows techniques a book my Granny gave me years ago has in it. Drawing the oval shaped head, then making it 'round' by drawing a bendy line over where the eyes would go, mouth... get the basic shaping right. Also, i imagine the technique for the figurine is similar; start off with basic shapes.

Couldnt draw to save my life now. But yeah, practice. Practice wasnt practice for me, it was fun. So all i need are the supplies, a decent bit of music to zone out to and maybe a dutchie, hehe.

Ive always been interested in getting a graphic tablet thingy that you got for drawing. It was WAAAYY down the list though, but im looking to get back into things that relax me more and i remember how much drawing did that.

I don't really have any new drawings up because I got stuck on a drawing. Something feels wrong but I can't quite put my finger on it. Something with perspective, that's always been difficult for me for some reason.

Anyway, I'm probably going to get some more projects going soon, since I'm doing a commission for a friend and I might have some commission coming in from the longsword group I train at.

It's about time I breathed some life into this thread again. One of my new year's resolutions was to draw more in 2014, so why not start immediately? I figured it would be good to get some practice in, but before I do so I'll just post some older stuff here:

Here's that commission I was working on according to a post of mine a while back. Pretty simple, basically a cartoon-caricaturesque portrait of a friend:

There's isn't really anything interesting I can say about this one. It's just some kind of cartoon, nothing extremely special.

EDIT: Looking at it again now, though, I do think it came out pretty well.

    ---

I made this one around New Year's to use as a 'happy 2014-card' for my swordfighting club:

Making this was extremely annoying not because of the drawing itself, but because I had forgotten to save regularly, and then Photoshop starting acting up and I was forced to abondon a few hours' worth of work. That was definitely a frustrating moment, and it took me a while to start working on it again. I do think it turned out OK nonetheless. It's pretty simple of course, since it's a cartoon thingy, but I do like the night sky and the fireworks quite a bit. Also, while it doesn't matter much because of it being a cartoon, I would really like to be able to texturise better, ie, to be able to make metal look like metal fabric like fabric, etc.

In one of my earlier posts I mentioned I got stuck on a drawing. That was this one:

As you can see, still not finished. For some reason I couldn't get it to 'feel' right. I'm not sure what it is. The perspective *should* be correct, I used all kinds of lines and stuff. As for the person jumping from the castle wall... I don't know. It doesn't look natural. Not dynamic enough maybe? It doesn't seem to fit into the rest of the drawing. Also, I was kind of intimidated by the rather large amount of work I'd need to put into the background and foreground. Lots of detail. I tend to overstretch myself a bit on these things, especially considering that making things like buildings and environments look good isn't exactly my forte; I always used to focus more on people. I should put in a LOT of practice before I return to this piece again.

Does any of you see anything specific that's wrong in this picture? I can't quite put my finger on it. :s

My latest sort of practice project:

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...d.jpg~original

The character is one that I came up with quite a while ago: a Dreamcatcher. Hence the butterfly net thing. I try to incorporate lots of feathers, beads, string and wood into his outfit, in keeping with the style of the little dreamcatcher items you can find in esoteric shops. I'm still hesitating whether I want to draw him into some sort of action way (ie, left picture) or more calmly (right). I do think both look pretty good and more natural than most of my earlier work. Perhaps I'm improving. Or it was just a fluke. Anyway, this is nowhere near finished yet, and it may remain a practice project. Still, it's nice to work on. I'm trying to re-draw some old characters that I came up with ages ago, and this is the first of those.

    ---

In the near future, I would like to practice a bit with environments, both natural and manmade. I'm absolutely horrible at architecture, and only slightly better at natural stuff like trees and rocks. Don't even mention furniture or animals. I really should put some effort into that. First though, the environments. I'm going to try and start simple, see where I end up. Try and visualise some locations that I came up with a good while ago. And, for a chance, not make a person be the sole focus of my drawings.
